We Are Augustines are an alternative rock band from Brooklyn, New York. On the 1st of October, just beginning their UK tour, they seized London's Shepherds Bush Empire to play their largest headline show to date.
The sold-out crowd went crazy as the Brooklyn trio kicked things off with 'Philadelphia (City of Brotherly Love)', and the band seemed genuinely surprised by the crowd's great response. The setlist consisted of their entire debut album, 'Rise Ye Sunken Ships', and every track was greeted by cheering fans who knew each and every word by heart.
We Are Augustines have a big sound yet manage to maintain an unrivalled intimacy and closeness with their audience - something that can be difficult for a rock band to achieve. This atmosphere was realised most during the raw, more moving tracks on the setlist - such as 'Barrel of Leaves' and 'East Los Angeles', during which fans raised their arms and sang along wholeheartedly.
At one point during the show a chant of 'WE ARE AUGUSTINES, WE ARE AUGUSTINES' erupted from within the crowd, and the band looked at each other in disbelief, as if to say "is this really all for us?" Towards the end of the gig, frontman Billy McCarthy told the crowd that that very night had made his life, and would be 'something to tell his children.'
After playing an encore partly consisting of the beautiful 'Chapel Song', the band were almost ordered onstage once again by fans, where Billy announced "we're gonna play another fuckin' song."
Nothing beats watching an incredibly humble, insanely talented, and unbelievably passionate band play music that practically strips them bare and lays their stories out for all to see - that is something rare. We Are Augustines have something that isn't seen often, and we're lucky to be around to witness it.
